From the sculpture's description on artsmia.org: ‘In what was…one of the wealthiest cities and greatest religious centers of the entire world, ancient Pagan (1044–1287 CE) in central Myanmar (Burma), more than 2,000 Buddhist monuments remain scattered across the arid plain. The largely abandoned brick stupas (reliquary buildings) and temples were once lavishly decorated with multicolored stucco (plaster) molding and sculpture… This sensitively modeled Buddha head reflects the meditative calm and somewhat sweet, humanistic quality associated with art of the neighboring Pala dynasty of Bengal, India. Its Buddhist sculptural traditions had reached Pagan by about 1000 CE through the portable mediums of bronze and terracotta.' This model was scanned and produced with a research process that captures surface texture and specularity more accurately - the research is led by Michael Tetzlaff, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, as part of a research effort that began when Michael was a doctoral student in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota. The work is now supported by an NEH grant, and the grant team includes UW-Stout, Cultural Heritage Imaging, and Mia.

‘Reportedly found at the ancient trading center of Bamiyan in present-day Afghanistan, this type of dish, with incised design (Sgraffito) and “splashed” with glazes intended to run freely during the firing process became popular in eastern Iran during the Samanid dynasty (819-1005CE). Produced slightly later, this example demonstrates both the precision and spontaneity with which the potter approached their craft. Set within a border of arcaded panels, the central medallion takes the form of an endless knot, a motif found on clay panels from the Indus Valley Civilization (3200-2500 BCE)…’

‘This extraordinary ceremonial vessel, one of a group, was discovered in the Lopburi–Pa Sak basin in central Thailand. The oldest settlements in this region date back over three thousand years and have yielded several important Neolithic objects. While a few ceramic depictions of animals in Neolithic and Bronze Age Thailand are known, this water buffalo, which stands as the centerpiece of the group, exhibits an originality, creativity, and superb workmanship that has no comparison in early Thai ceramic art. It is also the largest pottery buffalo known from this period.’
