My friend Victor Spinelli has a famous photograph called diver up. We have been planning to recreate this photo as a sculpture for Burning Man, and in preparation for this, we invited a model to help recreate the scene using 3D scanning technology. I scanned her several times, using both Photogrammetry & the Structure Sensor combined with Itseez 3D scanning software. We ended up using the Structure scan because the quality was a bit better. We will repeat the process with several models to compile them into the ideal scan & then begin the process of converting the mesh into a structure made either out of metal or wood. This house was once belonged to a timber baron in a small Northern California city. But after the logging industry went bust, it’s owner abandoned it to the elements. While not a complete ruin, this house will need a lot of TLC to bring it back to it’s former glory.
This house was an experiment for me in tileable materials and seeing how far I could get using nothing but Photoshop for texture creation instead of my usual go to, Substance Painter. Most of these materials started out with a diffuse texture I either photographed myself or found on CGtextures.com. I then created the normal, spec, emmisive, etc in Photoshop.
I think this technique works well if you’re going to be putting the model into an engine like Unity or Unreal. The textures hold up at very close and they can be used across many different buildings or props you may have in your game. Also being able to add secondary textures would allow for more variations like grunge.
