The Starforge was created in the distant past by the Watchers of Decay to bind and imprison The Elder within the dream world. The Elder could not be killed, but the sword would keep its body and spirit - a shade - separated. The shade befriends Valdo, teaching the ways of shaping and how to reassemble the map device. Finally, it lures Valdo to his prison and asks him to free the Elder by pulling the sword out of his chest. Valdo refuses, and barely escape the dream world from the Elder's wrath.
