Kako onda ispravno prikazati mapu naše planete u ravni? Ispostavlja se – nikako! Dakle, koju god mapu da pogledamo danas, ona nije verodostojna slika. Parametar koji se naziva Gausova zakrivljenost kod sfere obrnuto je srazmeran sa kvadratom prečnika, dok je kod ravni jednak nuli. Kako ova dva parametra nisu jednaka, jedno se ne može transformisati u drugo bez distorzije (iskrivljenja), što znači da od lopte, bez razvlačenja ili seckanja, ne možete dobiti ravan, baš kao i što od papira ne možete dobiti loptu bez preklapanja i gužvanja.
