The Akagi was an aircraft carrier build by the Imperial Japanese Navy and part of the first air fleet (the Kido Butai). She was originally laid down as an Amagi-class battlecruiser, but was converted to an aircraft carrier because of the Washington Naval Treaty. She was sunk in the Battle of Midway on 5 June 1942. The typewriter was selected as one of the 10 most influential patents by the Japan Patent Office.
Sugimoto received Japanese patent Nr. 27,877 in 1915, and
US patent Nr. 1,245,633 in 1917
He partnered with Nihei Otani to form the Nippon Typewriter Company in May, 1917,
manufacturing their first typewriters that same year.
The Nippon Typewriter Co. is now part of Canon, Inc.
