A request made by a watcher of mine on dA. I decided I wanted to practice retopology, and figured I’d take a random request instead of portraying one of my own characters! Retopology is by far one of my biggest weaknesses, and while I think this one turned out better than my previous ones I still have lots to learn (like the paws being a bit too square). My submission for the first Low Poly challenge of 2021! The combined lighthouse and windmill provides the Lighthouse Keeper with an excellent view of the surrounding reef, unfortunately it lighthouse no longer works as intended, meaning there have been a few… mishaps over the years. Though we are assured that it certainly wasn’t the Keeper’s intention! The crows nest provides a convenient way to cut across to get those fresh seagull eggs in the morning, and the diving platform provides a nice way to keep entertained through those hot summer days. There’s plenty to do and see - a fishing platform, covered to keep you protected from the midday sun, the odd wreck and legend has it there’s a treasure chest that’s been pulled on shore! This little bird nursery was a project to further push my understanding and skills of the handpainted game art pipeline, from concept to having a finished model. In this case, I also wanted to explore how to blend different terrain textures into each other, and how to generate grass with a particle system instead of placing them all by hand like in my previous props. I’m happy it worked the way it did! In order to get this on Sketchfab I even got some additional practice: Baking said ground textures onto the ground plane, and converting my grass particles into actual geometry. Merging those then ended up making my file twice the size - but “compressing” it brought it down again. Lots of mini-roadblocks, but here it is!
