Hypostyle hall of the Hathor shrine at the temple of Hatshepsut was the most difficult part of the photoscanning project from scientific grant “Dialog” (under directory of Jadwiga Iwaszczuk PhD, founded by National Science Centre of Poland for collaboration of IKŚiO PAN (Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures, Polish Academy of Science), PCMA UW (Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archeology, University of Warsaw) and Ministry of Antiquities of Arab Republic of Egypt.
Model was created from 5159 photos taken during a one hour of light gap per day, when the temple is covered by the shadow of the mountain in the late afternoon, but with still enough light for sharp images. The design of the capstan is taken from “Mémoires d’artillerie” by Surirey de Saint Remy, the French “lieutenant du Grand-Maître d’artillerie de France” and adapted for technical inconsistencies. The image below shows the use of such a capstan in the fortress of Lillo in 1640 (the virtual reconstruction is documented in this blog - in Dutch)
