Cette copie en plâtre est un surmoulage du XVIIIe siècle. Il a été réalisé d'après le premier moulage effectué sur l'original antique par le sculpteur Jean Péru au XVIIe siècle. Il présente la statue telle qu'elle était peu de temps après sa découverte en trois fragments en 1651 dans le théâtre antique, et avant son envoi à Paris. En effet, la Vénus d’Arles a été offerte en 1683 par les Arlésiens au roi louis XIV sur sa demande pour décorer la galerie des Glaces du château de Versailles. À l'origine, la sculpture en marbre plus grande que nature, aujourd’hui conservée au musée du Louvre, décorait sans doute une des niches du mur de scène du théâtre romain où elle accompagnait la statue colossale d'Auguste.
