The material used is a black cotton with the garment then being lined with silk. There is a naval stripe on the left shoulder where potentially medals would have hung or further indication of where the gentleman ranked on terms of the navy. There is a small split up the back of the garment, there to assist with movements such as getting in or out of vehicles or climbing on and off a horse.
