This replica stands in the center of McKennan Park in Sioux Falls, SD. It is a replacement for an older, folksy-looking wooden replica that was removed after vandalism in the 1960s. The wooden replica was in poor shape from exposure and seems to have been lost. When the city decided to replace the replica, I supplied a copy of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's early study maquette to be used for modeling. The replica was set atop the original pedestal previously occupied by the wooden replica. I used my iPhone mounted on a painters pole with a bluetooth remote to snap photos of the upper parts of the replica. In total, I used 288 photos out of nearly 600 taken. A small ancient Egyptian cat head made of a copper alloy from the collection of Bolton Library and Museum Services. The head is unprovenanced, but these objects are particularly well-attested at the sites of Bubastis and Saqqara. In ancient Egypt, the cat was associated with the goddess Bastet, and many objects like this were created to be given in offering at temples and necropoli.
This cat head features pierced ears and finely detailed eyes which may have held some form of inlay.

A small, limestone figure of the soldier Sa-Djehuty son of Sat-Djehuty from the ancient Egyptian site of Abydos. Excavated by John Garstang in 1908, the statuette was found in tomb 643. It likely dates to the Second Intermediate Period.
Measuring just under 20cm, Sa-Djehuty wears a heavy wig and a kilt with a plain belt. Prior to excavation, the figure was broken and has now been repaired. The appearance of the two parts is noticeably different, with the upper half appearing bleached, while the lower half bears extensive traces of paint around the bands of hieroglyphs. Red paint is visible on the legs and torso.
The text reads “An offering which the King gives to Osiris for the ka of the living one of the town, Sa-Djehuty, born of Sat-Djehuty, by his sister who causes that his name live, the lady of the house, Beki.

The equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius is a larger-than-life bronze statue of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Its original site is unknown, but it may have been part of a triumphal arch on whose attic it stood. The dating of the statue, which was originally completely gilded, is disputed and fluctuates between the years around 165 AD with a reference to the triumph over the Parthians in 166 AD, the 170s with a reference to the Marcomannic Wars and a dating only to the time of Commodus’ autocratic rule from 180 AD onwards.
A cast stands in the city of Tulln an der Donau. The statue is intended as a reminder of the centuries-long presence of the Romans on the Danube border.

At a strip mall across town is this concrete Statue of Liberty. I’ve driven by it for years. I decided to do a quick and dirty model of it. By the time I got to the strip mall, the sun was close to setting and I had to hurry.
As you can see, South Dakota seasons are hard on decorative concrete sculptures like this one. The agragate under the surface of the concrete is starting to show in places where the concrete has worn away. The protective paint is patchy giving moisture more places to penetrate and wear down the concrete.
This model is just the latest generation cast from a prototype I first saw in the 1980s when the Statue of Liberty’s centennial was approaching. Liberty fever was on the rise and someone cashed in by creating this stylized replica.
It has been recreated in aluminum, fiberglass and concrete. It can be found in numerous statuary and garden centers. Like the Boy Scouts copper replica, it is kind of ugly but it grows on you 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 922579 polygons.

I created this model from over 400+ photos shot on my iPhone. Bemused visitors must’ve thought I had the mother of all selfie sticks as I was lifting my phone high overhead with a painters pole to get the top of the sculpture!
