This beautiful water well is situated right next to the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, yet it is often overlooked by tourists. The Gothic iron work for the well dates to 1490 and was crafted by Quinten Matsijs, who is better known as a Master Painter and founder of the Antwerp School. The story goes that when the young Matsijs first came to Antwerp as a blacksmith, he fell in love with Catherina Heyns, the daughter of a fine arts painter. However, her father was of the opinion that a smith was beneath the standing of his daughter. Matsijs therefore retrained as a painter (eventually becoming one of the best known painters of his day) and thus won approval to marry Catherina. The Neo-Gothic well itself, made by the city's master builder Gustave Royers in 1900, bears reference to this tale. The inscription reads: “The iron work for this well was wrought by Quinten Matsijs. Requested by Charlemagne, Aachen Cathedral was founded in 8th Century in Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), Holy Roman Empire, now in Germany. Coronations of many Holy Roman Emperors took place here. The central part under the dome was a part of Charlemagne’s Palace, named Palatine Chapel. It is the only well preserved part of the palace left from the Carolingian era, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many extension building works were executed over the centuries, resulting in this peculiar appearance of the Cathedral with mixed architectural styles.
About the model
Texture: parts of the stone facade & relief texture, parts of stone window frames, parts of dome roofs, railing, roof toppers are modified from artworks for Canon’s papermodel by K.Yoshinaka / STpers. As for my own texture, I focused more on roofs, stained glass windows, sculpture relief details.

The original structure was built in 1904 according to the design of the architect Nikolay Zhukov and has undergone some reconstructions since then. It was also sometimes called “Tatar Mosque” because its congregation consisted mainly of ethnic Tatars. Socially, the Moscow Congregational Mosque was often viewed as the central mosque in Russia. It was one of the four mosques in Moscow.
The old mosque was demolished on 11 September 2011. The decision to demolish it was controversial.[1] In June 2008, the mosque was recognized as an object of cultural heritage, however, in the end of 2008 it was removed from the list of historical and architectural monuments.
A new mosque has been built at the site of the former one. It was officially inaugurated on 23 September 2015.
