St. Peter’s Square (Italian: Piazza San Pietro [ˈpjattsa sam ˈpjɛːtro], Latin: Forum Sancti Petri) is a large plaza located directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, the papal enclave inside Rome, directly west of the neighborhood (rione) of Borgo. Both the square and the basilica are named after Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus considered by Catholics to be the first Pope. At the centre of the square is an ancient Egyptian obelisk, erected at the current site in 1586. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square almost 100 years later, including the massive Doric colonnades,[1][2] four columns deep, which embrace visitors in “the maternal arms of Mother Church”. The agragate under the surface of the concrete is starting to show in places where the concrete has worn away. The protective paint is patchy giving moisture more places to penetrate and wear down the concrete. This model is just the latest generation cast from a prototype I first saw in the 1980s when the Statue of Liberty’s centennial was approaching. Liberty fever was on the rise and someone cashed in by creating this stylized replica. It has been recreated in aluminum, fiberglass and concrete. It can be found in numerous statuary and garden centers.
