With this study I had one major goal - examine how base color works with light while trying to stay to the color scheme of the original illustration as close as possible. In order to do this I found myself referring to the birch a lot - its white color helped me figure out light and shadow hue and value relation between all the elements of the illustration. I didn’t use textures (except for the alpha cards for the grass and moss) so I could change colors quickly. I also learned some new tricks, like using Data Transfer modifier in Blender in order to adjust normals of the moss grass to the moss itself so it would blend perfectly (more obvious in the Matcap view). In order for both sides to look good, I duplicated the mesh and flipped normals, while making them both single sided. This is a model of an 18th Century English hanger sword that I made originally using RealityCapture. I’ve returned to my original model, retopologized it, reworked the textures, and cleaned it up in some spots that needed manual attention. I’m quite happy with the result, and look forward to incorporating retopology in to my workflow more frequently. The blade is in excellent condition, and the hilt is a finely crafted work of silver. Both maintain an almost mirrored finish, presenting an enormous challenge to capture through photogrammetry. The initial model turned out okay considering the conditions, but several parts of the model had issues with continuity of the normals due to the nature of the more random topology of the model RealityCapture produced. This results in razor edges looking rough and jagged, as well as the smooth mirrored surfaces appearing lumpy and unfinished.
