Rozpoczęła się 21 lutego 1916 r., od trwającego 9 godzin niemieckiego ostrzału artyleryjskiego i trwała do 18 grudnia 1916 r. Ewentualne zdobycie Rejonu Ufortyfikowanego Verdun otworzyłoby Niemcom drogę na Paryż oraz zabezpieczyłoby Metz i Lotaryngię przed ewentualnym uderzeniem armii francuskiej wzmocnionej angielskim korpusem ekspedycyjnym. Szef niemieckiego Sztabu Generalnego, generał Erich von Flankenhayn, w „Memoriale Bożonarodzeniowym” z 1915 r. przedstawił plan zdobycia twierdzy Verdun. Zadanie zostało powierzone V Armii pod dowództwem następcy tronu, księcia Wilhelma Hohenzollerna. Naczelny dowódca wojsk francuskich, generał Joseph Joffre, lekceważył sygnalizowaną przez wywiad możliwość ataku na tym odcinku.
