The crossbow reappeared in Europe as a French weapon during the siege of Senlis and again in 984 at the siege of Verdun. They were used at the battle of Hastings in 1066 and by the 12th century it had become a common battlefield weapon. The crossbow superseded hand bows in many European armies during the 12th century, except in England, where the longbow was more popular.
