Chiesa San Pietro - Backside Facade (Tuscania - VT)
San Pietro is a Romanesque and Gothic-style, Roman Catholic church just outside Tuscania, province of Viterbo, region of Lazio, Italy.

The façade has a large rose window, decked with mosaics, hedged at the corners by the symbols of the four evangelists, and flanked by reliefs with elaborate carvings of plants, menagerie of animals, and a complex iconography of saints and figures of the old testament.
Below is a loggietta and on the ground is a sculpted main portal with a large rounded arch. The nave is flanked by rounded Romanesque arches and leads to a presbytery with a Ciborium for main altar. The presbytery has a geometric mosaic floor. The crypt has gothic tracery.

This is a carving found in the Ta Prohm temple in Cambodia that bears a striking resemblance to a Stegosaurus type dinosaur. Ta Prohm temple was built about the late 12th and early 13th centuries (1186) by King Jayavarman VII.
This naturally brings up the question, “How would an artist only a thousand years ago know what a stegosaurus looked like, unless he had seen one alive or was told what it looked like by someone else who had seen one alive?”
All over the world we find petroglyphs, pottery, paintings, tapestries, mosaics, and figurines of creatures that look strikingly like dinosaurs. We also find ancient stories from all over the world of humans interacting with giant reptilian creatures that sound very much like dinosaurs. Where did all these stories and artwork come from? Could it be that dinosaurs were still alive only a few centuries ago and humans still encountered them occassionally?

Anse de Laurons 2 is the wreck of a small Roman period sailing vessel dating to the end of the 3rd century CE, which probably sank during a storm while sheltering in the shallow harbor at Laurons, just west of Marseille in modern France. At only about 15m in length and with an estimated displacement of around 30 tons, it probably only traded between small harbors along the local coastline. When it sank, the port-side was quickly covered in sediment ensuring excellent preservation up to the deck and even the railing. Rigging elements, a spare rudder, and possible fragments from wooden panels that may have covered the hold, along with rarely-preserved structures for supporting the side rudders (the side “wings” you see in a lot of Roman period art). This reconstruction is based on plans by R. Bockius. The decorative elements are hypothetical, based on contemporary paintings and mosaics.

Economic prosperity in the city of Antioch, a vital agricultural and commercial center at the crossroads of the Roman Empire and strategically located on the N-S-E-W axis of the silk road, created an extensive middle-class population that was wealthy, sophisticated, cosmopolitan, and of course, liked a good party. Villas in this region were often opulently decorated with stunning wall frescos and floor mosaics, like this medallion of the wine god Bacchus. This floor mosaic was initially located in the entrance hall of a Roman villa as part of a much larger floor that included the similar mosaic also posted to this feed.
