This pack contains a selection of low-poly, real-time-ready, wicker baskets and woven bags appropriate for most Mediterranean (Inc. Middle East and North Africa) or European historical, or historical-fantasy, settings. The sources for these were primarily archaeological finds and iconography from throughout the Roman Empire. However, similar baskets could be found elsewhere throughout the Middle Ages and in to the modern period. Basket weaving technology has remained pretty stable for thousands of year. The woven items are more Mediterranean specific, as they were usually made of palm fronds - the two bags are based on Roman mosaics and archaeological finds from Egypt and come in various different positions. Economic prosperity in the city of Antioch, a vital agricultural and commercial center at the crossroads of the Roman Empire and strategically located on the N-S-E-W axis of the silk road, created an extensive middle-class population that was wealthy, sophisticated, cosmopolitan, and of course, liked a good party. Villas in this region were often opulently decorated with stunning wall frescos and floor mosaics, like this medallion of the wine god Bacchus. This floor mosaic was initially located in the entrance hall of a Roman villa as part of a much larger floor that included the similar mosaic also posted to this feed. As guests walked across the floor mosaic, these images of the wine god Bacchus and his “Thiasus,” or retinue of dedicated followers, would have created an atmosphere of wine-drinking revelry and merriment! The Great Mosque of Damascus founded the original principles with its innovated concepts. It was the first mosque in Islamic history to feature such luxury and large size. Although this depended to a certain extent on ancient Syrian patterns, the touch of Muslim workmanship was still evident.
