A collection of reprocessed fossils (other free assets here), ready to use as game props, particles or for optimized renderings, but “sadly” not for commercial projects as the original scans are licensed under CC Attribution - NonCommercial.
Each model is made of 1500 triangles, and 1024 pixels albedo and normal maps.
The original scans were first remeshed with mmgs, and decimated, UV unwrapped and baked in blender. Normal maps are ready to use for Unreal Engine, but don’t forget to flip their green channel in Unity!

A quick WIP for the Sketchfab’s texturing challenge (no textures yet).
An idea could be to try to display a few interestingly textured lowpoly versions of the statues in a virtual exhibition, revolving around a couple of flat shaded and naive versions of the statues.
The statue remeshing was done from the high resolution scan, separating the hands, head and pubic region with blender and mmgs to keep some details while decimating.
My first baking tests with complex materials went totally wrong though, so here is a WIP with just a roughness map and roughly baked (32 samples) lights from blender.

Messing around with refractive materials!
The Mosquito scan (415k tris) is from Geoffrey Marchal.
Modeling:
The scan was first remeshed with mmgs and baked to a lighter version (11k tris).
The amber fragment was roughly sculpted in blender (“I have no clue what I’m doing” style), keeping the main face flat (clay strips + flatten brushes).
The small fragments inside the amber were done by splitting all the main fragment edges and applying the “shrink/fatten” tool, followed by a random Displace modifier. Exterior fragments were then removed with a boolean modifier.
Material:
The important parts are the roughness and normal maps, which are a mix of PBR textures (rougher edges, smoother main face), while the refractivity is just a product of tweaking Sketchfab settings: opacity set to refractive and using the object’s roughness.
