An intrusive igneous rock of FELSIC composition. Granite exhibits a phaneritic texture (coarse grained). It is the intrusive equilvement of a Rhyolite.
The average granite composition consists of roughly:
~40% Potassium Feldspar (Typically Microcline)
~ 20% Plagioclase Feldspar
~20% Quartz
~5% Biotite
~5% Hornblende
(with the abundance of Potassium feldspar and quartz decreasing, and the abudnance of Plagioclase, Hornblende and biotite increasing as the composition changes from FELSIC towards Intermediate).
This particular specimen is classified as a Syenogranite.
