I had been wanting to create some props to fill out a setting I’ve been working on, and the SCUD seemed like something fun. It shares a design heritage with the Commadore 64, the first cell phone, and various computers from the 80s. I wanted it to feel like a ruggadized retro-future scanner and laptop that can be jacked into various ship’s system to run diagnostics 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 26636 polygons.

IBM’s attempt at a 4-inch floppy disk—1983’s DemiDiskette
In the early 1980s, the need became clear for a floppy disk drive and associated disk that were smaller and more rugged than the 5.25-inch standard which pervaded the personal computer world. A number of companies proposed alternatives, including Sony with a 3.5-inch disk, a consortium of Hitachi, Maxell and Matsushita (Panasonic) with a 3-inch disk, Tabor with a 3.25-inch disk, and IBM with a 4-inch floppy disk drive, the Model 341 and an associated diskette, the DemiDiskette. This program was driven by aggressive cost goals, but missed the pulse of the industry. The product was announced and withdrawn in 1983 with only a few units shipped, with IBM writing off several hundred million dollars of development and manufacturing facility. When the dust settled, the industry settled on a 3.5-inch standard and the other alternatives, including IBM’s, were relegated to the dustbin of computer history 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 8020 polygons.

A sci-fi holographic computer I made that is loosely based off the IBM 5100. Originally created for Second Life, shown here in Metalness PBR. Textured in Quixel Suite and Photoshop, modeled in Blender with the HardOps plugin.
The hologram is static for now, it normally has an animation (in other engines) but I am still trying to figure out a good way to have both a smooth interpolated rotation of the rings on the bottom and a hard transition of frames on the main screen (only way I can currently think of is to use the frame-by-frame method here but that would require way too much mesh data for smooth rotation). I may upload an animated version later 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 3734 polygons.
