Digital 3D reconstruction model of Cambuskenneth Abbey, Stirling, Scotland showing what the abbey and adjoining monastic buildings might have looked like in its rebuilt state following an attack by the army of King Richard II of England in 1383. The abbey has an accompanying freestanding bell tower or campanile which is unusual in Scotland. The tower is the only surviving part of the original church that remains standing to this day. It may have been spared its destruction by virtue of its use as a watchtower. The exterior masonry of the church may have appeared with a much brighter, lime-washed rendering than I have shown in this reconstruction. The masonry may also have featured decorative (painted) elements but such evidence for the exterior rendering of churches from before the reformation is hard to come by. This carved bench end was incorporated into the benches standing in the “Parish Church” until 1874. It was then sent with th remaining decorated bench ends to the Museum of Nordic Antiquities, the presnt National Museum of Denmark. This presumably late medieval, bench end was in the furniture of the “Parish Church” in a secondary role. It seems likely that it was originally made as part of the furniture in one of the churchesin the episcopal centre.
