This cope and hood dates from around 1860 and features the four Evangelists’ emblems and their names in Latin: St Matthew (the Winged Man), St. Mark (the Winged Lion); the Luke (the Winged Ox); St John (the Eagle). The sacred monogram of Jesus ‘I.H.S.’ is in the centre of a cross, with stylised flowers and pomegranites.
The hood features Christ and St. John the Beloved, surmounted by the Sacred Heart with Flames, Crown of Thorns, Anchor and Cross. The techniques used are needle painting in coloured silks and gold crouching, trimmed with a heavy gold bullion fringe. This vestment set once belonged to Bishop James Gillis, the Vicar Apostolic to the Eastern District of Scotland from 1852 to 1864.
The chasuble is French and probably dates from the nineteenth century. Called a ‘fiddle back’ because of its shape, it is made of cloth of gold and lavishly embroidered with roses and lilies as symbols of Our Lady. The central design is worked mostly in bullions and depicts the Lamb of God on the Book With Seven Seals.
