This sphinx was excavated from Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri by the Metropolitan Museum of Art Expedition 1928-29. This piece was probably created during the equivalent Late Archaic time period in the SW USA. Archaic hunter gatherers had not yet made the transition to agriculture, had no written language and no pottery.
