Approximately 15 cm x 8 cm Basket Handle Egypt Land of Goshen New Kingdom PeriodFrom the excavation at Mendes in the Delta region known as the Land of Goshen an important grain and fiber growing region of northern Egypt. This piece is likely from the later period of this site and is associated with the farmers who worked the fields to supply the Temple Complex of Mendes (the Ram-headed diety. This is from a private collection. This piece was probably created during the equivalent Late Archaic time period in the SW USA. Archaic hunter gatherers had not yet made the transition to agriculture, had no written language and no pottery. This is a digital reproduction of the shrine as it is now. Weathered by time, dented out of shape, stones missing and the scalloped filigree in the lower sections beaten out of shape.

Olive Jar Rim #BAH1993-1474. Spanish colonial era ships frequently carried amphora-like earthenware jugs called “olive jars” (botijas in Spanish) to hold wine, oil, & vinegar. These egg-shaped jars were roughly 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 cm in diameter. The St. Johns Wreck, believed to be that of the 1564 galleon Santa Clara, carried at least 130 olive jars; most broke when the ship wrecked – we only know the number by tallying the surviving rims. This rim has an outside diameter of 9.2 cm, and stands 4 cm tall.
