A Samian ware platter from Falkirk, possibly associated with Camelon fort. It is 5cm high and 18cm in diameter. It was made near Lezoux in France and the maker's mark ' RIIOGENIM ‘, which translates as ‘Ritogenus’, is stamped on the inside of the base. Fine dishes such as these would have been used by the Roman officers and their families stationed in the forts along the Antonine Wall. The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts and bathhouses are still visible today. Since 2008, it has been part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.
