Por muchos motivos, Hatshepsut es uno de los personajes más fascinantes del antiguo Egipto. Nieta, hija y esposa de faraones, no se conformó con el papel secundario que la sociedad reservaba a las mujeres, sino que asumió ella misma el gobierno de las Dos Tierras a la muerte de su marido, Tutmosis III, y durante la minoría de edad de Tutmosis IV. Pero en vez de conformarse con la regencia, se hizo proclamar Faraón del Alto y el Bajo Egipto (la quinta de la dinastía XVIII), adoptando con inteligencia todos los tributos reales y ganándose la confianza del poderoso sacerdicio de Amón. De esta manera, inauguró un largo reinado de más de 20 años (desde 1490 hasta 1468 a.C.) en el que el país del Nilo vivió en relativa paz y prosperidad. El impresionante templo aterrazado (y en parte excavado en la roca) que se hizo construir en Deir el Bahari es uno de los muchos monumentos que debemos a su enérgico gobierno.
