The monument is known to many people as “Papik-tatik”. Located on top of the hill overlooking Stepanakert. The sculpture was completed in 1967 by Sargis Baghdasaryan and Yuri Hakobyan. It is hewn from volcanic red tufa, and depicts an old man and woman, representing the mountain people of Kharabakh. The Soviet Azerbaijan organized protests because of the monument’s installation.
