Le Condor des Andes, Vultur gryphus (Linné, 1758), rapace charognard, est le plus grand oiseau terrestre de l’hémisphère ouest. Ce vautour fut vénéré par les peuples incas et des fêtes lui sont encore consacrées. Sa silhouette imposante lui a valu de figurer sur de nombreux symboles nationaux des pays andins et il continu d’inspirer les hommes en tant qu’animal puissant capable d’atteindre les plus hautes cimes. Malheureusement, aujourd’hui, la population de condors des Andes est en décroissance continuelle. Ce spécimen mâle, a été collecté en Patagonie, en 1831, par Alcide Dessalines d’Orbigny (1802-1857). Aujourd’hui ce condor est conservé au Muséum d’histoire naturelle de La Rochelle, ville où le naturaliste vécut son enfance. Remake of one of the film sets from the 1966 science fiction movie “Fantastic Voyage”. The film is about a submarine crew who shrink to microscopic size and venture into the body of an injured scientist to repair the damage to his brain.
The submarine featured in the film, the “Proteus U-91035”, is a nuclear-powered Navy vessel, originally built to study the deep-sea spawning habits of fish. The particular scene, depicted in this model, takes place inside the CMDF headquarters, where (in the film) the Proteus is introduced to the viewer for the first time.
The novel “Fantastic Voyage” was written by Isaac Asimov. The Proteus was designed by Harper Goff, who also created the Nautilus for the movie ‘20.000 Leagues Under the Sea’.
