Overlooking the ztown of Oldmeldrum, the impressive and well preserved hillfort of Barra Hill sits at summit of a distinctive hill, with excellent views of Bennachie to the west and Tap o' Noth hillfort some 20km further west. The hillfort consists of three major lines of ramparts, with an additional fourth on the northern side extending for approximately 50m. Over the course of the Ouse and Derwent excavations we recovered hundreds of sherds of Iron Age and Romano-British pottery. They came in all shapes and sizes and a variety of ceramic fabric types, and ranged in date from the Middle Iron Age (c300 BC) through to the later Roman period.
