Mostly it was sponsored by Paul Ricard, who wanted to experience the challenges on making a race circuit. At the time it was opened, it was considered the safest track in the world. Wide tarmac run off areas with red and blue stripes make a lot of room for mistakes, and give the track a unique look. Thanks to warm winters of south France, this track is a popular location for winter off-season testing.
