Powstanie trwało aż 63 dni, kończąc się 2 października 1944 roku. Powstańcy broń i amunicję zdobywali na przeciwniku, a braki uzupełniali bronią z konspiracyjnych zakładów – produkowano miotacze ognia, butelki zapalające, pistolety maszynowe „Błyskawica” oraz granaty („sidolówki” i „filipinki”).
Powstańcy nie mieli też jednolitych mundurów. Walczyli w ubraniach cywilnych lub
