This is my fourth time joining the Artstation Challenge, and I still learn as much as the previous times. The real challenge is accepting that not everything will be perfect. Everyone can make a perfect model, given enough time, but the time-limit here gives you the perfect opportunity to learn how to prioritize. Of course there are lots of things to improve, but for me it's mostly the enjoyment of these two months that I find important. I created this model based on references from the actual movie props and some amazingly faithful replicas.
The geometry is relatively light weight for use in game engines. The counter animation is geometry based, so it can be used dynamically and adressed by code.
Complete with 4K PBR textures.
My motivation for this piece came from rewatching the Aliens movies. I took this as an opportunity to learn Substance Painter and figure out how to bake maps for a more complex model like this.
It’s also always interesting to learn a few things about design in general and about the object you’re researching in specific.
When researching references it helped me to find out that parts of this design are based on real life rifles like the “M1A1 Thompson” and the “Spas 12” shotgun 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 7959 polygons.
