Remake of one of the film sets from the 1966 science fiction movie “Fantastic Voyage". The film is about a submarine crew who shrink to microscopic size and venture into the body of an injured scientist to repair the damage to his brain. The submarine featured in the film, the “Proteus U-91035", is a nuclear-powered Navy vessel, originally built to study the deep-sea spawning habits of fish. The particular scene, depicted in this model, takes place inside the CMDF headquarters, where (in the film) the Proteus is introduced to the viewer for the first time. The novel “Fantastic Voyage" was written by Isaac Asimov. The Proteus was designed by Harper Goff, who also created the Nautilus for the movie ‘20.000 Leagues Under the Sea'. My submission for a past Sketchwars theme: redo a classic…
My thought is that something went astray with the Thunderbird between 1963 and 1967. My 3D sketch is a proposal for a different aesthetic bridge between the lovely 1963 body style and the somewhat radical departure of 1967. This took 4 hours to do, completely done in 3D while immersed in VR using Gravity Sketch. I had 2D reference pictures in the scene, but all the ideation of the forms was done in 3D.
This is a non-traditional medium (skipping 2D) so I did a bunch of tweaking with post process effects to give it a more grainy textured paper/punchy colors/rendered look … minus the dabs of white gouache for highlights!
