This is a 3D scan of a cockroach I bought on etsy. It’s part of a larger project where I combined 3D modeled assets with photogrammetry (see http://whatswrongwithwhite.tumblr.com/image/177884973392 ). I used a lot of custom photo equipment (macro lens, polarization filters, extension tubes and a 3D printed cockroach holder from shapeways). For cleanup I used blender (cleaning up holes, chopping up into body parts, modeling deatils). For the final material design and export Substance Painter did a great job.

Like most people, I am a fan of Autumn, and wanted to combine my recent photogrammetry work with something seasonal. This was created from an actual pumpkin with photogrammetry. I photographed and processed the gourd in Metashape to create a hipoly models from which the textures were baked. A watertight rock I created using photogrammetry. Software wouldn’t process entire object as one, so I had to process the top half, then the bottom half, and merge the two together which was a bit of a pain.

Quick test using my latest photogrammetry rock textures. Rather than capturing full 3D rock scans, why not build a tileable texture and use it to displace meshes and create rock formations? That way all your rocks share the same texture, which can save an incredible amount of memory. Furthermore the results are still pretty realistic! You could even imagine creating a modular set of planes, and then just apply a different texture/displacement and make a totally different environment in seconds.
