A design inspired by the pulse rifle from the Alien movies. It always annoyed me that they decided to go with 1980s handguns for sidearms while the primary weapons were so thoughtfully designed. Here’s my latest project, a Smith & Wesson 66-8 .357 Revolver. This has a good amount of parts to it, so to have everything bake out right I had to bake by mesh name. I learned two things - that baking by mesh name is case sensitive, and trying to use an .fbx before it’s fully exported just doesn’t work. It corrupts your exported file. Just so you know.
With the textures, I used a combination of materials and masks to mimic dirt, grime, and soot from repeated use. I had to make about 7 alphas for all the height details.
I had to adjust some materials so it’d read better as metal instead of stone, as well as adjusting the damage information and swapping out some normals that I wasn’t satisfied with. Time to call this model finished for now. I learned quite a bit from making this thing, time to apply what I know now to something new 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 10040 polygons.

Kimber Custom Tactical Law Enforcement Rail II (TLE/RL II). This is the same handgun that’s used by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics team, which entered service from 2002 to present. Since around the 2010s, LAPD SWAT has upgraded their Kimbers to have a picatinny rail frame, which allowed the mounting of flashlights. The SureFire x300 series remain their main flashlight attachment of choice.
Interestingly, LAPD SWAT Kimbers feature custom engraved markings on the slide and has a special serial number “KLA114XXX”. KLA stands for “Kimber Los Angeles”, 114 is the police radio SWAT code, and XXX are the 3 unique serial numbers.
