Turns out it’s not that hard to achieve an authentic handpainted look. I’ve done a ton of researching and studying, and I’ve found a style that seems to really work when creating 3d ghibli-style scenes using Substance Painter. These techniques can be applied to basically any project. I’m really looking forward to improving the process later on this month. This is going to be an ongoing series where I explore different texturing techniques you can use to achieve an anime aesthetic, so make sure to sign up before the price goes up!

Rather than make each region of the spine it’s own upload, it made sense to upload all 4 regions together.
In order for me to understand the way the spine works I studied some wonderful models on this site as well as using my own art books to help me figure out what the characteristics are for each region.
The Cervical region being far more delicate and intricate for hosing nerves and allowing movement of the head.
The Thoracic featuring slightly larger and more simplistic vertebra that create overlaping links at the back to prevent our backs from bending too far the wrong way. They also have longer spinous processes that fold over oneanother.
Then the Lumbar region has these really heavy duty vertebra that again interlock to maximise on supporting the weight of the torso. So cool!
Lastly the Sacral region which pairs with the hips to form the pelvis!

This is a model of an 18th Century English hanger sword that I made originally using RealityCapture. I’ve returned to my original model, retopologized it, reworked the textures, and cleaned it up in some spots that needed manual attention. I’m quite happy with the result, and look forward to incorporating retopology in to my workflow more frequently.
The blade is in excellent condition, and the hilt is a finely crafted work of silver. Both maintain an almost mirrored finish, presenting an enormous challenge to capture through photogrammetry. The initial model turned out okay considering the conditions, but several parts of the model had issues with continuity of the normals due to the nature of the more random topology of the model RealityCapture produced. This results in razor edges looking rough and jagged, as well as the smooth mirrored surfaces appearing lumpy and unfinished.
