Homo ergaster Location: Nariokotome III, West Turkana, Kenya. Age: 1.6 million years ago. Material: epoxy resin cast. Dimensions: length, 204 mm; width, 133 mm; height, 124 mm. Notes: RLA catalog no. 2501.1rp31 (cast). Fossil discovered in 1984 by K. Kimeu. Recovered in 1984 and 1985 by Alan Walker and Richard Leakey. Cranium from 80% complete skeleton. Earliest specimen of Homo erectus. About 12 years old, may be younger. Known as “Turkana Boy." Cast made by Bone Clones, Inc. A simulated Iron Age roundhouse at the Ryedale Folk Museum, North Yorkshire. Roundhouses are relatively common in the British Bronze and Iron Ages, seemingly representing a standard type of housing in most areas. The style continued to be used even into the sub-Roman period in some cases.
This reconstruction is based on an example excavated at nearby Pickering Quarry. The common features of a roundhouse are the circle of timber posts joined by wattle-and-daub panels, and a roughly 45 degree pitched thatch roof. Here an impressive ‘porch’ feature has been interpreted, most likely used as a windbreak of sorts. 45 degrees was found by experimental archaeologists to be the most efficient design, and surprisingly strong. A hearth burns constantly in the centre, but there is no chimney as an updraft will allow sparks to start a fire, and besides the smoke discourages creatures from eating the thatch.

This is a church built somewhere around year 1100. The building material is sand stone and wood. The church has been built on top of 1,5 meters of previous “cultural building remains”
Through annual ring dating on wooden beams over the nave, it has been found that these trees were felled in 1136. The church is built in Romanesque style with the tower to the west.
(Notation 1 on the model) An inscription engraved above the entrance on the west side states that “Othelrik me fecit”, which means: Othelric has made me. This architect and stonemason is believed to have come from northern Germany and was one of the foremost of the 12th century in Västgötland.
