The alewife has been brewing ale for the household as they prepare for Sir Eustace and Lady Agnes’s return to Caerlaverock. Her ale is made using barley she bought from the monks at Sweetheart Abbey. She talks about Sweetheart and Lady Devorgilla and eludes to how it was named.
The alewife would brew and sell ale to the community. The quality of water at the time was so poor that it meant that ale was a safer bet to drink. As the ale went sour very quickly, the alewife would be continually brewing fresh batches to keep her customers happy. This meant that it was a way for women to add additional income to a household.
