Originalmente consistía en un rostro tallado con una apariencia monstruosa o grotesca. Las máscaras, hechas con papel maché , eran producidos en varios colores y adornadas con gemas y telas y las personas las usaban no solo en el período de Carnaval sino también en muchas otras ocasiones a lo largo del año.
