clay and with complicated hairstyles. In some cases
the clothing of the doll was painted on it, while in other
cases, girls were sewing clothes for their dolls out of
rags. Plagons had an educational character too, by
introducing girls to the role and obligations of a woman
in society. On the eve of every girl’s wedding day,
plagons were dedicated to the goddess Artemis.
A decisive step in differentiating religious figurines to dolls was the
appearance of a jointed doll (nevrospaston) with
movable arms and legs, while the use of mold by
modelers would boost mass production so as every girl

The theatre of Kourion was excavated by the University Museum Expedition of the University of Pennsylvania between 1935 and 1950. The Temple of Artemis at Sardis, the fourth largest Ionic temple in the world, is situated dramatically on the western slopes of the Acropolis, below the mass of the Tmolus Mountains in a broad valley opening into the ancient Pactolus River bed. As with the other two Artemisions of Asia Minor, the great Archaic/Hellenistic temple at Ephesus and Hermogenes’ Temple of Artemis Leucophryene at Magnesia-on-the-Meander, the principal facade of the temple was toward the west.
The area might have been sacred to Artemis from the earliest days onward as attested by a large Archaic altar of limestone blocks, located at the west end of the temple.
