Made this piece based on concept art called 部落 Mönkhtsetseg by Crispy Mushrooms! This was done over the course of 9 weeks during the CGMA course: Stylized Character Arts for Games with instructor Weston Reid! The character blockout and sculpt were done in ZBrush, retopology in Blender and CozyBlanket, baking in Marmoset Toolbag 4, texturing in Substance Painter and 3DCoat, and finally rigged and animated back in Blender! The class was challenging, but I had a lot of fun and learned a lot! I’m super excited to apply what I’ve learned in future pieces! Third project in 3DS Max!
As always I had a lot of fun making this project but this one seemed to take awhile to get a well structured lion head. Luckily I have a lot of great friends to help critique my work during the process and it always leads to something much stronger than I begin with, otherwise this lion may still be looking like an angry bullfrog.
My friends also suggested I have a bit of a fixation on things with gems in their head. So far, they aren’t wrong, but it’s mostly because I love painting in the bright colored lights. smiling_face

Tried out a new workflow with this piece, which is starting off with a base mesh in Zbrush, sculpt all details, bake the Diffuse and AO in Substance Painter, add Color Gradients to the Diffuse and use that as a base for my Handpainted texture! I learned a lot in the process in regards to zBrush and polishing my Handpainted skills when its about metal and cloth. But I also realised that I end up changing things up a lot in the final stage, which means I still rely a lot on my handpainting!
