Ce sextant, a fait partie de l’armement du Joshua, le bateau du célèbre navigateur Bernard Moitessier, « le vagabond des mers du Sud ». Instrument inventé pour la navigation marine, il permet de se localiser en mesurant l'angle entre l'horizon et un objet lointain (clocher, montagne) ou un astre (Soleil, Lune ou étoile). Il est composé d'une petite lunette, pour viser l'horizon, de deux miroirs (qui projettent l'image de l'objet visé), d'un bras mobile et d'un arc de cercle gradué sur lequel on lit l’angle formé entre l’objet visé et l’horizon. The submarine featured in the film, the “Proteus U-91035”, is a nuclear-powered Navy vessel, originally built to study the deep-sea spawning habits of fish. The particular scene, depicted in this model, takes place inside the CMDF headquarters, where (in the film) the Proteus is introduced to the viewer for the first time.
The novel “Fantastic Voyage” was written by Isaac Asimov. The Proteus was designed by Harper Goff, who also created the Nautilus for the movie ‘20.000 Leagues Under the Sea’.
