Made in less than a hundred copies, the self-propelled vehicle was one of several armored vehicles produced by Nazi Germany with the reuse of captured or obsolete materials: it was an old French artillery tractor Lorraine 37L to which a heavy field bolt had been coupled sFH 13 of 150 mm, without any other substantial modification. The vehicle was mainly used in North Africa by the DAK of General Erwin Rommel and by the troops placed to defend the Atlantic Wall, operating from the second line with indirect support fire. Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and exceeded the Air Corps’ performance specifications. Although Boeing lost the contract (to the Douglas B-18 Bolo) because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress become the third-most produced bomber of all time, behind the four-engined Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the multirole, twin-engined Junkers Ju 88.
