The user massaged the skin with the electrode, causing a flow of high frequency alternating current through the body. When the electrode was held close to the skin the patient felt tingling, and when in contact with the skin - warmth. Electrotherapy devices were very popular in the 1920s and 1930s. They were used in clinics, by doctors, natural therapists, and regular people.
