The Tower of Hercules (Spanish: Torre de Hércules) is an ancient Roman lighthouse on a peninsula about 2.4 km (1.5 mi) from the centre of A Coruña, Galicia, in north-western Spain. Until the 20th century, it was known as the “Farum Brigantium”. The Latin word farum is derived from the Greek Φάρος Pharos for the Lighthouse of Alexandria. This statue comes from the Forum Boarium in Rome, where it was found during the pontificate of Sixtus IV (1471-1484). The statue likely represented the cult statue whithin the temple dedicated to the Greek hero, and previously thought to be a temple of Vesta (due to its circular form, surrounded by columns). There are significant remains of gilding (gold leaf).
Hercules (Greek: Herakles) holds the Apples of the Hesperides in one hand and his signature club in the other.
The statue is approximately 250 cm tall (~8 ft), displayed atop a tall pedestal, and is slightly reflective due to the gilding, making it difficult to photograph.
