Fossils are often a labour of love and this is a good example of that. Sometimes they tell a story too. This ammonite assemblage from the Jurassic green ammonite beds of Charmouth, Dorset seems to have been trapped inside a larger Liparoceras ammonite. In the eastern part of the mansion to the left there is a guest room, the blue bedchamber, furnished and decorated in Gustavian style. The wall covering, an oil-painted tapestry from the 1790s, is a simplified variant of the wallpaper in the atrium on the other side of the hall. The bed with Sina hangings of mosquito nets, the dressing table covered with white cotton cloth, the veneered desk and the seating furniture signed by Stockholm chairmaker Erik Ohrmark are all good representatives of the Gustavian style. Messing around with refractive materials!
The Mosquito scan (415k tris) is from Geoffrey Marchal.
Modeling:
The scan was first remeshed with mmgs and baked to a lighter version (11k tris).
The amber fragment was roughly sculpted in blender (“I have no clue what I’m doing” style), keeping the main face flat (clay strips + flatten brushes).
The small fragments inside the amber were done by splitting all the main fragment edges and applying the “shrink/fatten” tool, followed by a random Displace modifier. Exterior fragments were then removed with a boolean modifier.
Material:
The important parts are the roughness and normal maps, which are a mix of PBR textures (rougher edges, smoother main face), while the refractivity is just a product of tweaking Sketchfab settings: opacity set to refractive and using the object’s roughness.

I had some concept art sitting around of a plant fairy trapped in its eternal home of amber (a simplecg monthly challenge from a while back), and never got around to modeling it.
