The model has 3 levels of detail, with limitations of 5,000 polys, 2,500 polys and 800 polys. The texture maps for this model were limited to 2048 x 2048 px. Here’s my latest project, a Smith & Wesson 66-8 .357 Revolver. This has a good amount of parts to it, so to have everything bake out right I had to bake by mesh name. I learned two things - that baking by mesh name is case sensitive, and trying to use an .fbx before it’s fully exported just doesn’t work. It corrupts your exported file. Just so you know.
With the textures, I used a combination of materials and masks to mimic dirt, grime, and soot from repeated use. I had to make about 7 alphas for all the height details.
I had to adjust some materials so it’d read better as metal instead of stone, as well as adjusting the damage information and swapping out some normals that I wasn’t satisfied with. Time to call this model finished for now. Prompted by the lovely staff here at Sketchfab, I have decided to research a bit more about the pistol this model is based on, and boy was it a fun read!

The design dates from the 1860s, and is attributed to Louis Dolne. The gun was manufactured until the end of the 1800s.
One of the rarest gambler/hide away/ personal defense deringers around. Incorporates a 6mm (22) rimfire revolver, “knuckles” that unfold to provide a grip for the revolver and a 2 1/2” folding dagger. Weapon is 4” long when folded. Expands to 8” when at full length. Marked “Dolne - 6mm” (L. Dolne - Imuur) on frame, folding trigger and exposed springs. Brushed finish, overall excellent. Known as the Apache Knuckle-duster (Up-Pash) for the Parisian fighters, called Apaches, that colonized the French capital starting in 1875.

This is one of those projects in mind long time ago wich finally sees the light. But at last, my beloved Pirate is done.
I really love pirate´s stories since I was a kid. Reading a lot about that piece of history, I learned that sometimes is more interesting the real version than the romantic side of it.
In this case, my inspiration waved between the fictional character Sophia of A Plage Tale Requiem, (and her absolutely amazing dismissed concept arts) and the impressive Grace O’Malley (a fiery red headed Irish woman born in Ireland in 1530) who was known as a pirate and a trader that even got to meet Queen Elizabeth I.
Of course, Mary Reed, Anne Bonny, Elaine Marley and Felicia Moreno were also very important for the creative process <3
