Cairn Liath is an Iron Age broch that sits proudly on a rocky knoll and commands views over a long stretch of coastline. Broch’s are substantial stone towers or roundhouses only found in the far north of Scotland. They were constructed and used between 600 BC and 100 AD.
This broch has a circular interior 10.2m in diameter and substantial walls over 5m thick; there was one entrance passage to the building. The walls survive to 3.66m high, but originally the building would have stood to a considerably height and had higher floors. A staircase to higher levels was built into the wall.
The third Duke of Sutherland ‘cleared’ this broch in 1868 and some of his finds from his antiquarian excavations are preserved in the National Museum of Scotland. 7 years ago, I scanned this Nanotyrannus : https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/nanotyrannus-lancensis-young-t-rex-7b0967fa27674d959647868686b6717b . However, the model was far from perfect.
I figured I would scan it again for the Agisoft Nature Challenge.
This time, I managed to create a watertight model that should be 3D printable. I also set the number of polygons to 300k on purpose : half the weight of the original model, but with more details !
This is a cast of the real fossil of a Nanotyrannus Lancensis found in Gilmore, Montana, in the Hell Creek formation, in 1946. It is about 65 million years old. Scientists used to think Nanotyrannus Lancensis was a species distinct from the famous T-Rex, but recent discoveries tend to show that a nanotyrannus is actually a young T-Rex.
You might ask yourself why the skull is not symmetrical : this deformation occured during the fossilization process.
