A personal project about learning Houdini and procedural modeling. Back when I first started learning hard surface modeling, I remember struggling when making Picatinny rails haha. Now I am back for redemption and can generate any Picatinny rail I want, both a high poly and low poly! Slap a smart material on it in substance and this is the result! This is an M14 Battle rifle that has been converted to a prototype hybrid tech weapon. This was part of a series of weapons designed as part of a covert US military project that began in the mid 1960s. [REDACTED]. Project ATIW (Advanced Technologies Infantry Weapon). This particular prototype explored the idea of using chemical propellants and electromagnetism in tandem to fire the projectiles. The core of this weapon system operates mostly like a standard M14(without full automatic capability). Once the projectile is fired, a series of high powered electromagnetic coils further accelerates the projectile before it exits the barrel. The ammunition is comprised of a ferromagnetic core with a proprietary heat resistant tungsten alloy jacket that is capable of withstanding incredibly high temperatures and pressures.

The removable super-capacitor bank allows for 10 coil assisted shots, and coil assist can be toggled by using a dial on the right side of the weapon.

I created this model based on references from the actual movie props and some amazingly faithful replicas.
The geometry is relatively light weight for use in game engines. The counter animation is geometry based, so it can be used dynamically and adressed by code.
Complete with 4K PBR textures.
My motivation for this piece came from rewatching the Aliens movies. I took this as an opportunity to learn Substance Painter and figure out how to bake maps for a more complex model like this.
It’s also always interesting to learn a few things about design in general and about the object you’re researching in specific.

This is all that remains of SS Rifle, one of the earliest surviving examples of a small pre-fabricated screw steamer in the British Isles. Rifle was purchased by the Locheil Estate in the 1860s for use on Loch Arkaig, ferrying goods, passengers and mail between the isolated dwellings around the loch.
As well as being a practical vessel, Rifle was also used for pleasure, often carrying shooting parties.
The boat was laid-up in the 1930s, and whilst being scrapped, sank and lay buried until removed by the army after becoming a hazard to wartime vessels working from the pier. Rifle was blasted away from the pier, losing the bow in the process.
Despite being submerged for over half a century, it was raised in 1990. Although in a very fragile condition, Rifle’s propeller is a well-preserved example of an early design.
The model was created as a part of ‘Scanning The Horizon’ 3D digitisation project.
