These birds were bagged by Crown Prince Rudolf on the 22nd of January 1889, only nine days before he committed suicide in Mayerling, Austria. The nest of the white-tailed eagles called eyrie can be as tall as four meters and is often used for many years. The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a human, and the body of a lion. Facing directly from west to east, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx appears to represent the pharaoh Khafre. The original shape of the Sphinx was cut from the bedrock, and has since been restored with layers of limestone blocks. It measures 73 m (240 ft) long from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) high from the base to the top of the head and 19 m (62 ft) wide at its rear haunches. Its nose was broken off for unknown reasons between the 3rd and 10th centuries AD. The Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the most recognisable statues in the world. The late 14th century alabaster tomb of Goronwy ap Tudur and his wife Myfanwy, prominent members of the family which gave rise to the Tudor dynasty, is located at St Gredifael’s church in Penmynydd, Anglesey. When the tomb chest was originally carved it would undoubtedly have been one of the finest monuments of its time. It was originally situated in the friary in Llanfaes but following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, the tomb chest was dismantled and moved to its current location at St Gredifael’s near to the original family home of the Tudors. I was excited to discover in my research on the Temple of Zeus at Olympia (ca. 460 BCE) that the University of Heidelberg had made available online the published findings of the German excavations that began in 1875 (https://goo.gl/eyPAo9). In Volume 3, I found a photograph of the reconstructed east pediment sculptures (https://goo.gl/qLsfp3), which inspired me to paint it (since Greek statues were polychromed) and create a displacement map. “Pausanias…identifies the subject of the East Pediment as the chariot race between Oenomaos, King of Pisa, and Pelops, a suitor of Oenomaos’ daughter Hippodameia. He adds that the race has not yet begun. The quietness of the scene suggests that the specific event is the taking of the oath by the contestants before the race, watched over by Zeus…in the center of the pediment.” The remains are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. This turtle was caught in 1832 on the banks of the Rio Solimões during an Austrian expedition in Brazil. It came to the NHM Vienna in 1834 and is one of a few found specimens of this rare species. Arrau turtles live in the wetland areas of South America and are among the largest freshwater turtles in the world.
