Agamas originally lived in forest and bush across Africa, but have since adapted to live in villages and compounds where their habitat has been cleared. They live inside the thatch of huts and other small spaces, emerging only to feed. If caught out in the open, agamas are able to run quickly on their hind legs to reach shelter. The desert agama can still be found in the dry areas of North Africa. Despite their name, they avoid bare sand.

The Australopithecus boisei skull, is the most famous fossil from Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. OH 5 was discovered by Mary Leakey in 1959 and originally classified as Zinjanthropus boisei by L. Leakey in Nature later that year. The accepted genus name has since changed to Australopithecus, this fossil is also know by the genus name Paranthropus. This discovery spurred paleoanthropology toward a modern, multidisciplinary approach, and focused paleoanthropologists’ attention on East Africa. Unique in hominid evolution, A. boisei’s massive skull features a wide, concave face, enormous, flat molars (about 4 times as big as modern H. sapiens) and cranial adaptations for powerful chewing, hence its nickname, Nutcracker Man. Note the sagittal crest and extremely large area for muscle attachments on the zygomatic arch. The thick jaw allowed for the species’ exceptional chewing capabilities. This is an animation of sub male Whale Shark (Individual TZ 209, “Mosi” Rhincodon typus) that was reconstructed from gopro footage based on dives with the shark nearby Mafia Island, Tanzania in November 2022. We thank Chris Rohner and Stephanie Venables for diving with us, and for providing footage and for generally supporting the work.
CG artists Johnson Martin and Aaron Olsen used the software Blender to align various gopro camera views to reconstruc thte body shape of this individual. “Mosi” has been filmed previously along the Mafia coastline and is well known to divers there.
