Believed to be commemorative of the solar eclipse observed at Xochicalco in 743 CE, the Temple of the Feathered Serpent is the most highly decorated within the city, featuring numerous carvings across its facades. These silhouette sculpture portray feathered vision serpents and are unique to
Copan. It is believed that originally they were part of the decoration of Structure 3.
Vision serpents are the conduit between the earth and the supernatural realms. They connect a Maya king to his source of spiritual power from the gods and deified ancestors (Asociacion Copan, 2010, p.195).
